Building accessibility into everything we do

Bella Grimwade, BMT Customer Support Executive, explores how accessibility underpins BMT’s systems.

Accessibility is central to how BMT designs its systems. Whether it’s through improvements to the UI of our end-to-end awards management system, BAFTA Nucleus, which offers intuitive form creation and customisable data collection, or BAFTA Events, our end-to-end events management system that builds accessibility into every stage of event booking, organisers and bookers alike benefit from seamless, inclusive experiences.

Nucleus enables administrators to create forms that capture accessibility requirements with ease, supporting engagement across a wide range of processes. Its modern interface ensures accessibility is built in from the outset, and several new 2025 features strengthen this further:

  • Dark Mode for Admins, improving readability and comfort in all lighting conditions.
  • Enhanced CMS Editing Within Preview Mode, allowing direct content editing in the Entrant Interface, with translation tooltips and quick-edit options.
  • Clickable Links in Admin Notifications, giving users instant access to support resources and release notes.
  • Pin Awards for Easier Access, enabling frequently managed awards to be kept at the top of each Admin User’s list for quicker navigation.

Our Events system applies the same approach to event planning. Clients can collect accessibility data at the point of booking, and bookers can specify requirements such as BSL interpretation, captions, quiet spaces, stair-free routes or wheelchair access. Organisers can also create their own options, with further support available from our team. The latest 2025 enhancements expand on this accessibility focus:

  • Accessibility Features Assignable to Individual Seats, allowing spaces to be marked as stair-free or wheelchair-accessible.
  • New Seating Plan Icons, clearly identifying wheelchair, flexible wheelchair and companion seats for better layout visibility.
  • Copy Auditorium Feature, enabling administrators to duplicate entire seating plans, including accessibility settings, ensuring consistency across venues.

Administrators receive notifications when bookings include accessibility requests, ensuring each one is reviewed personally and confirmed with care. Bookers can track their requests within their interface, maintaining transparency at every stage.

This commitment to accessibility also extends to Cloud Studio, our cloud-based production platform originally developed to make BAFTA’s events and broadcasts available to guests remotely, wherever they are. By removing physical and geographical barriers, Cloud Studio ensures there’s no limit to who can take part. With the recent addition of live captioning, we’ve expanded this reach even further, creating a more inclusive and engaging experience for all audiences.

At BMT, accessibility is never an afterthought. It’s a defining part of how we design, refine and deliver our systems — ensuring every product we create keeps inclusion and accessibility at the forefront.
